FAQ Regarding the Emerald Coast Beaches

Can I bring my Dog?

Okaloosa County, Bay County and the City of Destin do not allow pets on the beach.  South Walton County allows only property owners of South Walton County to obtain beach pet permits (850-892-8156).

The beaches South of Panama City are less regulated regarding dogs on the beach.  Franklin county does have a law requiring that dogs either be on a leash or under the owners control. Self regulated good dog behavior is the general accepted rule of the beach.

What's this "Flash of Green" I've been hearing about?

The green flash is best viewed overlooking the ocean, on extremely clear days at sunset. This phenomenon occurs as the last part of the sun sets in the thick layers of the earth's atmosphere.  Watch closely and you may be able to see this beautiful site!

The sand on the beach looks like sugar.  How come it is so white compare to other beaches?

The Sand on the Beaches of South Walton is sugar white and extremely fine.  This is because the sand is composed primarily of pure quartz crystal unlike anywhere else in the world.

Over million of years erosion of quartz crystals in the southern Appalachian Mountains traveled by way of creeks and rivers being refined along the way.
